VR/AR Investments in 2016 were at USD 2.3bn

11 months ago, we reported that in Q1/2016 there were VR/AR investments valued at USD 1.1 bn, while the majority of the investments went into the development of Magic Leap. Now, Digi-Capital has released the numbers for the entire year 2016, detailing how much money was invested by venture capitalists and corporate investors into the new industry.

In total, USD 2.3 bn were invested in the early stage market of VR/AR, spread across all different sectors of VR/AR. This is more than three times the USD 700 mn invested in 2015. In our opinion, this is a clear sign that VR and AR are going to continue growing at a steady pace. Interestingly, the VR video production has also taken approximately 10% of the pie, despite critics saying that this technology has no future. Unsurprisingly, AR HMDs still take the lead, with Magic Leap leading the field when it comes to raising funds. Have a more detailed look at the distribution statistics.
